Lanzarote in the Canaries is one of the better value sunshine holiday destinations in Europe. Offering great weather all year round – at a fraction of the cost of further flung options such as the Caribbean and the Far East.
Lanzarote first started to gain in popularity forty years ago – when package holidays in Spain first started to take off. And since then has evolved to become one of the most visited islands in Europe. Along with the other six Canary Islands in the chain.
Unlike some of the other larger islands Lanzarote has not been blighted by tourist over development and as a result there are no huge mega resorts or high rise buildings blotting the landscape. Instead visitors are greeted by the site of uniform white washed houses – set against the many volcanoes which first burst forth here in the 1730´s and which are today the islands main visitor attraction.
Flights to Lanzarote have dropped in price considerably in recent years – thanks to the fact that more low cost airlines are now flying to the island. In the UK travellers can take their pick from a number of options, including easyJet, Ryanair and Monarch. With flights to the island available from all major airports.
And with returns starting at about €100 – depending of course on the time of year.
Many visitors opt to book Lanzarote hotels for the duration of their stay. With over 200 establishments offering all levels of accommodation and comfort from budget through to five star. The bulk of the best value hotels are located in and around the resort of Playa Blanca which is located in the south of the island.
Wherever tourists stay Lanzarote is very easy to explore thanks to the fact that it is very small. The local bus services are not very reliable though and don’t run to many of the main attractions. So it is sensible to book car hire in Lanzarote if you plan to get out and explore the island.
Head to the Timanfaya Volcano Park for dramatic scenery – as this is where the main eruptions on the island occurred in the 1730´s. Leaving much of the interior looking like the surface of the moon, punctuated by burnt-out and now dormant peaks.
It’s possible to enjoy holidays in Lanzarote at any time of the year – although the autumn months are widely regarded as the best time to visit.
